welcoming 2020

12/31/2019

Like Queen Elizabeth, I may view 2019 as having been a little bumpy, but I look forward to 2020 with resolutions galore and a loving family that continue to make me one of the most hugged people in Canada and two irritating dogs that make me one of the most licked.
I wish all of my friends a Happy New Year in which I hope you experience much love, both given and received .

Christmas

12/25/2019

This post from two years ago still seems appropriate today. We have just finished morning gift opening. Each year there are less presents and significantly less waste (wrapping paper, package containers, etc) than the previous year. The joy is in seeing the four kids buy better and more thoughtful gifts for each other and in some cases use their own Christmas gift money to pay for gifts for their siblings. With three of them going to Christmas Eve church service last night , I think that they are all learning the many meanings of Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all.

Hymn

12/22/2019

My favourite hymn. My favourite modern theologian, Marcus Borg, writes of life providing you with thin spots where you are closer to God. This hymn is a thin spot for me. If you are not a person of faith, or don’t seek a thin spot, enjoy [this] anyway.

Christmas music season

I accompanied Pam and daughter Lauren to the Chan Centre at UBC on Friday evening to see the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performance which included Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which I love. In law school in Toronto I was a member of Phi Delta Phi, a well funded fraternity which treated me to several trips to operas, ballets and plays. I always expected that my life would include regular attendance at such cultural events but I must admit that while in my heart I am a person of culture, in my actions that has not been the case. Workaholism, raising children and general cheapness have kept regular attendance at cultural events a goal for the future, but never a significant part of my present .

I am getting a little too old to not live out my dreams. My dreams almost ended in September so I recognize that there is no time like the present. My New Years resolution for 2020 is obvious. Enjoy the many cultural events (especially music) that take place over the Christmas season. Merry Christmas
