Paying It Forward Parentally

5/28/2023

My parents would do anything for me and when they were alive I always knew that they were in my corner.

This morning I awoke joyfully in my happy place, Harrison Hot Springs. Ok, I admit the joyful part was just waking up one more time. My plan was to peacefully mark UFV quizzes from the new term and do yard work. Everyone else was in Abbotsford, Pam having headed back last night. A day of some work and coffee at Muddy Waters was suddenly interrupted by a text from our oldest son Andrew wanting me to take him for a haircut. That would require a return to Abbotsford.

“Where?” I texted. “Tommy Gun’s” he responded. Great. I have to return to Abbotsford and then pay for a forty some dollar haircut? I have mentioned previously that I am genetically frugal and I usually get a fifteen dollar haircut downtown ( which is still expensive on a per hair basis). I thought for a moment and texted that I would leave Harrison right away.

And here I am sitting at Tommy Gun’s listening to loud music, waiting to sacrifice my credit card to parenting. Pam, incidentally is in Langley waiting while Lauren and Jordan take part on the MS Walk fundraiser.

Parenting. I am an Uber driver and a wallet. My remaining years are in servitude to my offspring.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way, apparently. This is the lesson of my parents’ example. Perhaps not the best way to parent. But apparently our way.
